ΑΕΝαΟΝ

Native edible plant species as determinants of biodiversity, local ecological knowledge, and awareness of a dietary culture that promotes health

A common problem, a common response

Crete, the South Aegean, and Cyprus share the same plants and the same threats. Biodiversity does not stop at borders. That is why AENAON works cross-border: what we learn on one island has value for the others too.
Human pressures.   Populations of native edible plants are shrinking due to residential development, intensive agriculture, livestock farming, and indiscriminate harvesting.
Insufficient documentation. Their nutritional value, as well as their agronomic value, have not been adequately studied, are not documented, and are difficult to defend at the policy level.
Knowledge being lost. Which green, when it is gathered, how it is cooked: local knowledge is passed on less and less to younger generations.
Climate and nutrition. Climate change and food insecurity make resilient, low-input species more valuable than ever.
We collect and identify. Plant material, using various methods, preserved in botanical gardens and seed banks
We cultivate rather than uproot. Pilot cultivations and mother plantations, so that species become more accessible for study and documentation.
We bring the plants closer. Urban and visitable gardens with native species, in Crete, the South Aegean, and Cyprus.
We share the knowledge. Nutritional and social assessment of meals and habits, and education for children, professionals, and communities.
